Is there an OSHA requirement about storing pallets over dock doors?
My warehouse manager has built storage racks over the dock doors on the warehouse. Is this safe? I can’t find any specific requirement on it, but the forklifts drive under the racks all day.

Use of mechanical equipment. Where mechanical handling equipment is used, sufficient safe clearances shall be allowed for aisles, at loading docks, through doorways and wherever turns or passage must be made. Aisles and passageways shall be kept clear and in good repair, with no obstruction across or in aisles that could create a hazard. Permanent aisles and passageways shall be appropriately marked.

Best Space Use with Pallet Racking
Any business that needs to store reasonable or large quantities of product eventually runs up against a problem: how to best use their available warehousing space. This invariably happens when a business has grown beyond its initial boundaries, but is not yet making enough money to justify occupying bigger premises. Given that, that justification may not yet manifest itself for some considerable time, the onus is on that business to find a way to really use the space it has. And that is best done with a modern pallet racking installation.
Like everything, pallet and warehouse technology has been developing with marked changes over the last couple of years. The old wood and steel pallets are out, things of the past – replaced with light weight, modern plastic pallets: easy to stack, almost unbreakable and far less likely to injure users in the event of an accident. Similarly, the racks on which pallets sit have come on in leaps and bounds, with light weight, super strong materials and space saving configurations replacing the rather hidebound setups of just a few years ago. These days, a company can build a warehousing solution to suit any space, by using different sizes and configurations of pallet racking to make their alleys and storage places really work.
The old way was simple, but unwieldy: racking came in two or three different sizes, which could basically be installed either against a wall, flush, or as an alley wall in an open warehouse. Modern racking solutions come in a huge range of individual lengths and heights, which effectively mean that a company can build the ideal bespoke warehousing for their space and products – even adding to what they’ve already built when the time comes. Because modern pallet racking materials are light and strong, they’re also cheaper than they used to be: and that, in turn, allows a company to invest for future storage without breaking the bank.
While no-one can ever have too much storage space, there is such a thing as finding the right time for the right expansion. Modern pallet solutions allow companies to make such better use of their available warehouse space that they can often double storage capabilities: which gives excellent breathing space for company profits to catch up with spatial requirements. Once the business is in a position to negotiate a rent on a larger warehouse, so be it (and of course all that current pallet racking can come into the new space, where it can be added to create a real tailor made stock area) – in the meantime, modern pallet storage racks do an excellent job of making the most of what a company already owns.
For businesses running a very close budget, the simple, strong nature of modern pallet racks offers an extra dimension for possible savings. Refurbished pallet racks can be just as good as new, and are certainly an ideally cost effective solution to pressing storage needs. With every penny counted across the board at the moment, modern companies learning to squeeze their budgets may well find that refurbished pallet racking buys them a couple of years’ breathing space. In this world, that’s hard to find.
