whats the most inexpensive way to move a canoe by car?
its a 16′ mohawk fiberglass canoe.
i have a van.

probly on the roof im guessing.
but i would need to buy a kayak rack right?
theres no way to just tie it down securly with just rope?

With a regular car you can use those foam “pool noodles” (the hollow tubes kids use to play in the swimming pool) at K-Mart or one of the 8′ grey foam pipe insulation tubes at Home Depot and cut it in half. Lay the two tubes of foam on the roof, front and rear and lift the canoe from the side onto them, with the canoe upside down, of course. Then run long straps with ratcheting buckles over the boat (you can get sets of these cheaply at any hardware or car parts store), running the straps through the car or van windows and tightening them down. Tie the stern and bow to the front and rear bumpers with strong nylon cord.
If it’s a panel van with no windows, yes you will have to get a roof rack because there would be no other way to run straps around the boat to secure it to the car.
